The Aftermath of Katrina
I am deeply saddened by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I received a link to some photographs this afternoon and am completely floored by the destruction of the hurricane as well as the levee breaks.

Thousands of survivors have lost their homes and have nowhere to go. Refugees are being evacuated to Houston and Dallas to the Astrodome and Reunion Arena respectively. To see how you can help, please visit the American Red Cross and FEMA websites.

Also, don't forget that in addition to the homeless people, many pets are homeless as well and animal shelters have been wiped out. The ASPCA website gives information on how to help our furry friends as well.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost homes and loved ones.

My thoughts are with New Orleans...
And the rest of the Gulf Coast as well. Most of you know how special New Orleans is to me (DH and I were married there) and I hope the city and the residents weather the storm with little trouble as can be expected.

My free time has been drastically reduced....
Why, you ask, has my free time been drastically reduced? Well, because last Wednesday I was offered a job and I start on September 1st! Woo!

The funny thing is, I went to interview for this position last Tuesday and was offered the position on Wednesday. I'm going to be Marketing Coordinator for a manufacturing company in Plano. The moment I walked into the building for my interview I felt that I was in the right place. And then I met my boss, with whom I got along with famously from the very instant I met him.

I'm taking a small pay cut, but in light of the fact that my commute time has been cut in half, I'm not complaining too much. And on top of that, I'm getting the opportunity to travel with the sales team and when we have our tradeshows once a year and national conference once every two years, I will get to go to those as well, which is pretty cool. And the benefits are awesome as well!

After I accepted the job, I ended up getting calls from 3 more people for interviews! At first I was second-guessing my taking this job, but in light of all the pros of this position, I'm positive I made the right decision.

This weekend has been mostly spent cleaning. I cleaned out the closet and am doing all the laundry, and put a buttload of things up for sale on Ebay. I feel like I need to start getting things in order now....however....

For the last few days I'm unemployed, I'm going to do absolutely NOTHING! But, I'm very excited to get back to work. This has been a nice break, but I'm ready to get back into the working world and be useful.

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!!!

When it Rains, it Pours...
Okay, first of all, what's up with all this spam crap I'm getting all of a sudden? I don't know what happened!!!! SPAM IS THE DEVIL!!!

Anyhow, I digress...

So, on the job front news, I got two more nibbles in addition to the one I had the other day that have both materialized into interviews!

Job #1 - Marketing Specialist for a commercial realty firm in Downtown Dallas. It was voted one of the best places to work by Dallas Business Journal. This one is Monday at 3 pm. Not sure about it since it is, of course, about a 60-mile roundtrip drive from my house, and I'm not even sure I can afford the gas. But, I need the interview practice, so I'll go and check it out. I'll say right now, though, that it will take A LOT to get me to drive all the way downtown again.

Job #2 - Marketing Associate for a manufacturing company located about 20 minutes from where I live. I go to this interview Tuesday at 2 pm. The Marketing Manager sounded extremely nice on the phone and the job description sounds like it would be a fun opportunity--lots of different hats to wear, since I get bored easily.

Job #3 - This was the initial telephone interview with Human Resources for a Web Merchandiser for a very well-known watch/accessories company. What sounded really interesting about this job is that there is lots of room for growth. The person who was in this job previously was promoted out of it, so they encourage internal growth and don't expect you to stay in a certain position or division of the company unless it's absolutely the best fit for you. I expressed great interest in this one over the phone and my resume was passed to the hiring manager, and if they're interested I will be contacted for a face-to-face interview. So far I haven't heard anything, but I would like to have a shot at this one.

So, I guess we'll see how it goes! I have to admit, though, that I'm really enjoying this little vacation......

Decorating Adventures, Part Deux
Friday evening I finished re-doing the master bathroom. The total of everything was less than $40--I either had some of the things already on hand or bought them on sale. I think the single most expensive thing I purchased was the Buddha tealight holder from Target for $9.99.

I've been wanting to do a more Asian-style room for a while. I enjoy the minimalist look, especially in the bathroom.

So, without further ado, here are the pics!

This is the bathtub area. I have to say, I love this tub. It's HUGE! I painted the little "Peace" picture above the mirror--well, I actually painted the canvas, but stenciled the lettering and the dragonfly!

This is the sink area. As you can see, we have a ton of mirrors in this bathroom, so it was a challenge to take the picture without anyone seeing me or the flash of the camera. It's a bit dark, but you get the idea. The reason the photo looks cut off on the right is because I was in the closet taking the photo and the doorway blocked part of the camera. Oh well.

And lastly, a closeup of Buddha!

Concerts, Beer, and too much Food
Ugh. This evening DH and I went over to his parents house for dinner. Actually, the dinner excuse was basically a ploy to get DH over to move some furniture :) but it was a nice evening nonetheless. We went to Luna de Noche in Plano and I ate way too much. Seeing that I haven't been eating much lately and what I have been eating was relatively healthy, my choice of restaurant was ill-advised, at best. Oh well. I'm hoping a cup of ginger tea will aid in my digestion!

Saturday night we met Eric & Christine over at Baker Street in Addison so Eric could show off his new Pontiac GTO. I actually didn't get to look inside it, since I spent the evening drinking beer and talking to Christine, but DH drove it and said it was pretty nice. DH said it was as nice as the Infiniti G35 he had before he traded it in for the RX-8. Sigh. I don't think I'll ever get over the loss of that G35. Anyhow, it was great seeing Eric & Christine again!

Thursday DH and I went to the System of a Down concert over at American Airlines Center. His boss's wife had free tickets and he invited us to come along. We sat in one of the suites and all in all, it was pretty plush. As I am not a System of a Down fan, however, I didn't really enjoy the show all that much. I'm hoping that the boss's wife might be able to come through for some NIN tickets, though.....

I re-decorated the master bathroom this week as well. I will post pics as soon as I can!

Gobbledygook
Yeah, nothing much to post lately. Yesterday I went to lunch with two girls from the old job--it was really nice. We went to Grand Lux over in the Galleria and I was baaaad. Well, I ate sensibly for my meal--the luncheon omelette and a green salad that was actually quite good, except I'd ordered the omelette with spinach, tomato, mushroom, and onion, but when it came to the table there was pancetta in it instead of onion. I thought about sending it back, but hell, it was pancetta, after all, so I let it slide. Then for dessert I had the biggest slice of chocolate cake ever! I was happy happy happy.

I took a nasty spill in the garage on Monday--I'd gone out to get groceries and right when I was about to leave Kroger it started raining. I suppose raining is a bit of an understatement, because the rain was coming down sideways, the wind was blowing so hard. When I finally got into my car I had to deal with the flooding of the streets due to the construction on 121 (bah!) and must have tracked some mud into the garage from my tires, because when I went out to get the last load out of my car I slipped. Not my finest hour. I fell hard on my right knee and have a deep bruise as well as a bruise on my upper left arm where it struck my car bumper. Lately when I've gone out I notice people looking at it and I want to say, "No, I have not been beaten up!" Well, by my car, maybe......and the garage floor.

I did another yoga tape today and am still marveling at the way it makes me feel. I just feel more alive each time I do it....and it actually makes me want to eat healthier as well. Last night I made a lentil rice soup and it was excellent--DH gave it a thumbs up! I'm thinking of doing some orzo pasta with spinach, pesto, and cannelini beans tomorrow night, but who knows? I may try to convince DH that we need another date night since he'll be in class on Friday.

Well, I guess I had more to say than I thought I did! Decorating-wise, I'm tackling the master bathroom next. When I get it finished I will post the pics!

And now, back to TiVo! Eh, maybe I'll read instead....

Adventures in Decorating
So during my unemployment stint I have been bitten by the decorating bug. We've lived in this house for a year and a half now and there were no window treatments and the family room lacked warmth. Plus, we'd been sitting on a damn loveseat since we moved in--I have no idea why we never moved the sofa from the front room.....

When my friend Laura was here I asked her to help me move the larger sofa in the family room and that was all it took. We started rooting around the house for ways to add color, and ended up covering the throw pillows on the sofa with old dark red pillowcases that were in my apartment bedroom. Then we added an ivory velour pillow to further accent and break up all the green in the sofa (there are little cream and red decorative accents on the sofa). Well, that still left window treatments, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I decided to use fabric napkins folded into triangles and put up with simple nails to the wall. The whole treatment cost me $14 for the window in the family room and breakfast room. (The back room is essentially one large room with the kitchen, breakfast room, and family room.)

Sofa and Family Room:

Breakfast Area (temporarily used for the moment as my office):

Then I went crazy in the kitchen and decided I needed a little area rug in there. I had eight placemats that I have never used that matched the napkins I used for the windows, and cut the tassels from one side. I then taped them together on the underside with carpet tape and covered the seams with decorative ribbon on the top. The only drawback on this one was the glue I used to affix the ribbon to the rug--it came through and shows the glue marks. I don't have a sewing machine so I had to improvise! :( I think it still looks pretty cool, though.

Here's the rug:

So far that's been my foray into decorating! And it all cost me less than $25!

Woo!

Serenity
No, not the Firefly movie, but the way I'm feeling at the moment...

Yesterday I finally went and got a library card from the Plano Public Library System. While I was there I picked up three workout videos, one of them being a yoga for beginners (I also have a dance video and a bellydance video--I like variety!).

I did the yoga video this morning, finishing it about 15 minutes ago, and have to say that this is the most peaceful I've felt in a very long time.

I went to a yoga class once, about a year ago, and really loved it, but never pursued it--I could go on and on making excuses, but I won't--and decided to pick it up again while I had some free time on my hands.

All I have to say is, wow. I can't say that it was easy, because it wasn't, and I definitely am not very flexible at the moment, but it was one of the best experiences in exercising I've had in a while. I have problems with my right shoulder since it got pulled a couple of years ago, and the stretches really helped the tightness ease a bit.

H/T to Bearette24 for inspiring me to pick up the video--good luck on your journey to becoming a yoga instructor!
