On The Pile
I don't know about you, but there's something both satisfying and sad about finishing a really good book. Satisfying because of the sheer enjoyment of reading the words, and sad because there's no more. :(

I wasn't much of a sci-fi fan until DH introduced me to Robert Heinlein. The first book I read by him was The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, which was excellent, Farnham's Freehold, equally excellent, and the one I finished last night was The Door Into Summer. It's difficult to pick a favorite among these three, because they're equally wonderful books and captivating reads. I think I finished The Door Into Summer the quickest though, in just over 2 days.

So, now that my foray into sci-fi is at an end for the moment, I have in the queue:

The Corset Diaries (Mindless fluff--woo!)
Girl With a Pearl Earring
The Ordinary Princess (One of my favorites growing up--I decided to re-visit it)

The list right now is pitifully low, but I have about 50 other books waiting for me at the library, just waiting to flip the switch and bring them active. The reason I've started doing this is because I was getting a buttload of books at a time and not having the time to read them!

I am also listening to audiobooks. I love to listen to audiobooks during my commute, but it appears that I'm about to run into the same problem with the audiobooks as I have with my regular books--I'm listening to one I bought on Amazon at the moment, but have 2 more checked out, and 3 more waiting for me at the library!

Here's my list of audiobooks:

Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals Queens
Assize of Dying
Emma Brown
Emma
The Mill on the Floss
Wuthering Heights

Man! Good thing TV hasn't held my interest much this season, otherwise I'd be up to my neck in reading material! Or maybe I already am, but I'm in denial.....

Um, NO....
Julie Andrews thinks Cameron Diaz perfect for Maria in Sound of Music

Okay, have any of you seen A Life Less Ordinary or My Best Friend's Wedding? She can't carry a tune in a bucket, and Julie Andrews thinks CAMERON DIAZ would make a perfect Maria????? Has she gone completely off her rocker??????

Thankfulness
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! It's hard to believe that 2005 is coming to an end. Time seems to pass so quickly, now. When I was young it seemed that the days would drag on endlessly--now, everything goes by so fast, I can hardly keep up!

I'm thankful for so much in my life.....

My Family--their unconditional love and support has made me into the person I am today.

My Friends, Blogger and otherwise--All of you are very special to me and I am so grateful that you have been brought into my life.

My Darling Husband--I don't know what I would do without him. He is my champion, my lover, and my best friend. He has enhanced my live immeasurably.

My Furry Children--These four creatures bring so much joy into my life.

My Health--I am grateful that my body has remained strong and not succumbed to any major illness.

There's so much more that I could say, but really, those are the major things. I sincerely wish all of you a very healthy and happy holiday. :)

Just a Random Thing I Thought About...
I was looking at Nabbalicious' blog this evening, and one of the things she loves is grande Americanos. For those of you who don't know, Cafe Americano is espresso and hot water.

That got me thinking about one of my trips to Starbucks. It was December of 2003, I'd recently been laid off from my job, and I was going over to help my sister decorate our parents' new house for the Christmas holidays. I had probably been up late the night before, so on the way over I decided to stop by Starbucks to grab a coffee. I went in and gave my order to the barista.

Me: "I'd like a grande Americano, please."

Barista: "All right. Do you want roofer cream?"

Me: (What the hell?) "Um, sure."

[Waiting around for my coffee]

Barista: "Grande Americano!"

Me: "That's me!"

Barista: "You want roofer cream?"

Me: "What?"

Barista: "You want roofer cream?" a little louder this time.

Me: "What is roofer cream?!?!?"

Barista: "You have an Americano, right?"

Me: "Yeah..."

Barista: "DO YOU WANT ROOM FOR CREAM???"

Me: Oh shit. "Yes."

Damn Starbucks. Sometimes they make me feel like a total idiot. I must be an idiot, though, to pay $2 for a cup of coffee that I could make at my house for about $.25.

Bill Gates Scores Some Pocket Change

UPDATE: DH stated at dinner tonight that Mr. Gates' pose reminds him of yet another sinister gazillionaire, Montgomery Burns.

"Eggggsellent"

XBOX 360 MANIA!!!

Oh, look. Bill Gates is so happy that his minions, er, the public, is so enthusiastic about the new XBOX 360. In the two minutes he was standing there, he probably made about $50 million.

Sigh. How do some people get so damn lucky? OOH! I know!

Uh, yeah...
Yeah, I've never seen the movies (actually, I think I fell asleep during the first one) or read the books, but I figured what the hell...I'm a quiz-a-holic.

Thanks, Piff!

The Slowest Week Ever...
Yawn. It's only 10 am and all I can think about is going back to bed! I'm even drinking coffee, today, for Pete's sake!

DH decided to take the week off, so this morning as I was dragging my ass out of bed, he was blissfully asleep, snoring his happy little nose off. I grumbled as I got ready and came into work. Sigh. Sucks not having any vacation time yet! But, on the bright side, it is only a three-day week, so I can't complain too much.

This weekend was awesome. DH and I went to the Westin Stonebriar resort located about 15 minutes from our house and commenced celebrating our minibreak. In about October I told him that I needed to get out of our house for a weekend and SOON. The Westin was running a "Heavenly Romance" package that included breakfast in bed and a late check-out, so we decided to book that for the weekend. It was very nice and relaxing.

Friday night we went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Wow. Definitely the best one yet, in my opinion. It was just so....dark. Honestly, I don't recall one sunny day throughout the entire movie. It really added to the mood of the story, though. And, I have to say, Daniel Radcliffe is a hottie. I feel like a sick person saying it, but man! He is such a cutie!

Sunday, after we checked out of the hotel (ended up leaving around noon instead of the late checkout) and went househunting. Visited four homebuilders in the area, and we think we've found the house we want. It's such a big decision! Hopefully we can get a good deal, because my dad happens to build for the company we are looking at building with! So keep your fingers crossed for us!

My New Favorite TV Show...

Tuesday night on NBC, my new favorite television show comes on: My Name Is Earl. I usually end up Tivo-ing it and we usually watch the episode during dinner the day after. I like Tivo, you can fast-forward through commercials. Anyway, I digress...

For those of you who haven't seen this gem of a show, dammit, get on it! Jason Lee (on my list of favorite actors) plays Earl, a man who's taken the bad road in life--stealing, lying, cheating, etc. He wins $100,000 with a scratch-off lottery ticket one day, and while he's celebrating, he gets hit by a car. While in the hospital, Earl has an epiphany and decides to use the money he won to undo all the wrongs he's done in his life (he makes a list of about 260 things).

(From L to R: Catalina, Earl, Randy, Joy, Darnell)

Enlisting the help of his not-so-bright brother Randy and the housekeeper at his hotel, Catalina, Earl sets out on his misson of crossing off the items on his list, one by one. However, he's beset by turmoil on the way. His ex-wife, Joy (played to trashy perfection by Jamie Pressly,) is dead-set on getting his lottery money any way she can, and she tries to get her boyfriend Darnell (the "Rubber Band Man" from the Office Depot/Max/Staples commercials--I can't remember which one) to help her.

I can't tell you how enjoyable this show is. I laugh out loud for most of the episode, especially at Jamie Pressly's antics. Whoever wrote the dialogue for her character was a freakin' genius. At one point Earl asks her a question about why she hocked something and she says, "Well, cigarettes don't grow on trees, Earl." I about keeled over from that one.

Randy, Earl's brother, is a bumbling bear of a man, probably about 5 IQ points away from being declared MR, but he always has the best intentions.

And while the episodes are laugh-out-loud funny, they always make you feel good at the end, because Earl learns a lesson about life and discovers how rewarding it is helping others. Plus, watching Jason Lee breakdance is freakin' HILARIOUS! I think it's good that he's finally getting some more recognition--I loved him in the Kevin Smith movies.....I have to say, though, that he was probably wacked out on something when he named his kid--Pilot Inspektor. Woo!

So, if you haven't watched it, please give it a chance--I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. It airs 9 pm/8 pm CST on NBC.

Dinner
Inspired by Poppy, here are photos of tonight's dinner:

Mexican meatloaf, lovingly made by DH. Went a little crazy with the onion, but it was still good.

And the plated dinner with rice pilaf and steamed squash and zucchini. I put Mrs. Dash extra spicy on the veggies! We used ground turkey instead of ground beef for the meatloaf, which is why it looks lighter than normal meatloaf....

It's a Sad, Sad Day for Me...
Last night we had lasagna. A lovely, cheesy, vegetable lasagna that DH made.

I thought I could handle it. It was SO good. But then, about an hour and a half later, I was sick as a dog.

In the past two years I have developed an intolerance for milk products. This is a horrible fate for me, the cheese lover, and I've been trying to fight it ever since. Lactaid doesn't really work for me, and I don't like having to take any more pills than I already am at the moment.

Last night, though, was a turning point. I just don't like the way I feel after eating dairy--even the tiniest little bit. Now, I can handle yogurt, since it has active cultures, and some parmesan cheese on top of my salad doesn't usually hurt me.

So, I'm going to try a little experiment. I'm cutting all dairy out of my diet for at least a month.

(sob)

If any readers out there have any advice on some good dairy substitutes I'd appreciate it! I already drink soy milk and have tried soy yogurt and like it.

Interesting Happenings Over the Fence
I was taking a nice, hot bath around 8:30 pm last night. Submerged in the water, bath oil softening my skin, head on my bath pillow, reading a book, I was ready to bliss out and enjoy some relaxation time.

Until I heard some quite loud sounds coming from my neighbor's house. (The master bath/bedroom is right next to our neighbor's backyard) Let me give you a little background on this...

I have never met my neighbors formally. On one side of us, we have a family with the loudest damn Schnauzers ever. They bark 24/7. I like to call them "Yappy Dogs."

The other neighbor, the one I'm talking about today, is called "Mr. Fixit," because when we first moved in he tore down his old fence and commenced remodeling his backyard. We would be in bed, trying to sleep at 11 pm or later, and good 'ol Mr. Fixit would be hammering away in his backyard. Very considerate, huh?

Last night, though, came the sounds of a very different kind of hammering. Seems like Mr. Fixit was having a little get-together with a lady friend IN HIS HOT TUB. At first I thought I was hearing things, and, of course, being a nosy person, I lifted my head out of the bathtub and got closer to the window. Yep. I was definitely hearing some heavy moaning and groaning over there. I called DH in and had him listen to it too, and we both congratulated Mr. Fixit on him getting some.

It got quiet over there for a while, and I heard some other people in the backyard (Let me tell you, these people are LOUD--I can't tell you how many loud parties have been over there while I'm trying to sleep--on a weekday, no less). I thought the carnal session was over (I thought it was strange that she would make so much noise with other people around in the house...), but after I'd gotten in bed around 10-ish, it started up again. However, the best was yet to come (no pun intended).

As you know, I've been in a Vicodin-induced haze lately due to my root canal pain. Last night was no different. I was just about in a deep sleep, DH beside me, around 11 or so, when suddenly he sat up in bed and said, "Did you hear that?" Did I ever. Oh my god.

This woman was so loud, and went for so long, I thought Mr. Fixit was killing her. And it went on. And on. And on. And on. I swear, it got to the point to where I was saying, "she must be faking it by now."

Now, I'm all for people getting their groove on, but this was getting ridiculous. First of all, they were doing it in the backyard, very loudly, I might add, at 11:30 pm, and there are families with children across the alley and on the other side of them. Just as I was getting annoyed enough to do something about it, they stopped. And I was finally able to get to sleep, after, of course, DH and I laughed about it for a good 5 minutes.

I'm beginning to wonder if they're running an adult film company over there.

The Root of the Problem...
Went to the dentist on Saturday morning. When they started drilling and all, they discovered that I indeed needed a root canal. Yay. All in all, the experience wasn't really painful or unpleasant, but now the entire right side of my mouth is sore, which makes chewing a near impossibility. I slept most of the weekend, hopped up on Vicodin. Sadly, this morning I couldn't take the Vicodin, so I'm making do with 4 Ibuprofen.

Hope everyone else had a nice weekend! Not much to report on my side, as I slept it away! I did TiVo one of my favorite movies, Coming to America, though. Can't wait to watch it!

What a great number! 1-30, for those of you who don't know, is my birthday. I love my birthday--I do a countdown every year starting January 1. 2006 marks the last year of my twenties. I am going to have to do it big!

What's funny is that the psychic I visited who told me I'd meet DH also told me I'd have a little girl at the age of 29. Hmmm. So far no kid yet, but who knows? It only takes 9 months to grow a baby--we could conceive in March and still make the deadline!

My arm's sore. Why? you ask? I got the flu shot today. My first one ever. Yeah, I know that's strange, but seeing as I haven't had the flu in about 7 years I think I've done okay. What sucked is that I stood in line for over two hours to get the damn thing. Yep, you heard me.

I was originally scheduled to have a flu shot when they came to my office, but I came down with strep throat and couldn't have one. For some reason I have this feeling that if I don't get a flu shot this year that I am going to get sick, so when I heard that CVS in North Plano was giving out flu shots today, I decided to go get one. I figured 15 minutes to drive there, 15 minutes to get the shot, and 15 minutes to drive back. No problemo.

WRONG!

When I walked in at 9:50 this morning, the line snaked from the pharmacy, down the snack aisle, and curved around near the cashiers at the front of the store. I was probably in the 40's in terms of number of people. By 11 I had moved up to the snack aisle, and by 12:30 I had my shot. Luckily I made friends with the people around me so there were people to talk to.

At shot time, when there were about 2 people in front of me, this woman comes up and says to us, "There is a woman here with triplets and she's been standing in line for over an hour with these three babies, waiting to get her flu shot. Would you please let her go in front of you?" I figured that a few more minutes wouldn't hurt, so I said yes and this poor, harried-looking woman comes up with THREE LITTLE BOYS and gets her flu shot. Poor lady.

I ended up making it back here to work a little before 1.

What an interesting Friday!!!

Run run run run!
Man, I was busy yesterday! Pretty much all day was spent hanging posters in my company's demo room. We're a manufacturing company, you see, that manufactures niche-market copier/fax/scanners for people who aren't interested in the larger-type machines for big businesses. All of the products that we carry are in our demo room, and we've just re-done the graphics that are placed above them. My boss and I hung the graphics above the machines yesterday, and man, that was way more difficult than I originally thought it would be!

First, we had to measure everything out to make sure all of the posters were evenly spaced. Then we had to measure out where the nails would go, then place the hooks into the back of the foamboard in the correct places, then, once all that was done and we were ready to hang the posters, it all had to be level! Whew! First of all, since I'm horrible with straight lines and the like, doing all of this was a Herculean task to begin with.

I tried to help while my boss was at lunch by going up on the ladder and measuring out nail holes, but I got up there, did one set, and freaked out due to my extreme fear of heights.

Even though it took most of the day, though, the end result looks REALLY good, and I'm happy with everything.

Is everyone's calendar filling up as quickly as mine? Geez! Let's see, this weekend I'm going to have my potential root canal--I say potential because my dentist says it could go either way. Next weekend is a visit to H-town to see my mom for her bday (the first time I've seen my family in 4 months!). Weekend after that is DH's and my mini-break, and then the weekend after that is Thanksgiving here in Big D with DH's family.

December has filled up fast too. The first weekend will be with my dad and stepmom, celebrating Christmas with them and my dad's bday, the weekend after that is Girlie Getaway 2005--The Holiday Edition with Mrs. Wallington and Krissypoo, then the whole following week I'll be in the DC/Philly area on a business trip, traveling with our Sales Manager in that area and visiting dealers. Weekend after that is Christmas, and we'll be in H-town for that, and then the next weekend is New Year's!

Where is this year going??? I can't believe everything has gone by so quickly!

Ho Hum...
For a Halloween, last night was rather uneventful. I think it was because a cold front came in about midday, bringing rain and cooling down the temperatures rather drastically. As a result, we only had about 10 trick-or-treaters the entire night. Bummer! Now I have all this candy and don't know what to do with it. Maybe I should bring it up to work?

The work party turned out well. I love it when a good party comes together. Of course, I ended up running around about 3/4 of the day, in heels, no less, and ended up going home exhausted and with a blister on my foot from my shoes. But, I still had a lot of fun, and when I plan parties, that's just what I do--go crazy until the entire thing is over! Good thing I didn't have a big wedding....

DH has to run a month-end report for his job, and some lady where he works had the bright idea to have him run it at midnight. So, my darling had to wait up until midnight and try to log on to the network, but the Internet was down over at his office so he couldn't connect. He comes in about 12:30 am (I was fast asleep by this time) and informs me that he has to drive down to the office (a good 30 min away) to run this damn report. He ended up getting home about 2:00am. Grr.

I have almost all of the Christmas shopping done! Woo! All that's left to buy for is DH's family. I'm well on my way of realizing my goal to have the shopping done by Thanksgiving. I love it when I can do that.....
